Saturday saw Belgium GAA host the second Benelux tournament of the season with it being a case of ‘One Club. Two Teams’ (Breandán you have permission to use!). With two evenly split teams, Belgium A and B started off in different groups with A facing Eindhoven and Dusseldorf and B against Lux and Amsterdam.
Belgium B had a difficult task ahead of them and unfortunately came up short on the day but absolutely no one can say that they didn’t give 110%. As pointed out on the day, this team will have tough days like Saturday again ahead of them and it’s that heart, determination and drive that will stand to us into the future.
On the other side of the draw, Belgium A cruised through to the semi-final after accounting for Eindhoven and Dusseldorf with relative ease. However, the full back for Dusseldorf was the highlight of the footballing day as his play and movement was a joy to watch. He was robbed as he didn’t get player of tournament for some strange reason! In the semi-final, Belgium saw off Lux after some clinical finishing.
In the final, Belgium were against an Amsterdam team that were confident and playing well all day. In the first half this was evident as Amsterdam had the upper hand and led by 4 points at half time. However, Belgium fought back and eventually pulled away making the victory that bit sweeter knowing it was achieved after being behind. Great play by men like Naoise and Deccie to name but a few meant we could celebrate in style in Devs on the night.
Special mention to Louis and Jody for participating in their first tournament for the club and a SPECIAL SPECIAL mention to Ross and Timmy for participating in their last. I know I speak for everyone when I say thank you so much to these two men for all the work, time, commitment and heart they have put into this club over the past few years. On behalf of the team, we wish ye the best of luck back home!! (Westmalle Triple is making me emotional and sentimental in ways I never thought I could be!!!!!)
From here – we push on and look forward (in many ways) to the next tournament in Amsterdam in 4 weeks.
